There are a few important promises you must make to yourself so you could live your life to the fullest. People can take a lot of things for granted and they can forget the things that really matter. Make the most of your life by keeping those promises you must make to yourself in order to find true happiness. I really love this German proverb which goes something like this: “Promises are like the full moon; if they are not kept at once they diminish day by day.” There is much truth and wisdom in these words! Make a commitment to improve yourself by keeping the next few promises:
1 “I Promise That I Will Accept Both My Strengths and My Flaws.”
This is definitely one of the most important promises you must make to yourself. Learn to love and appreciate yourself just the way you are. We all have flaws and we all make mistakes. Don’t be afraid to fail because failure is actually the best teacher you’ll ever have. Remember that you are a special person who is worthy of being loved. Get rid of all your insecurities and accept both your strengths and your flaws because they define this wonderful person that you really are.
2 “ I Promise I Will Not Try to Control Everything.”
There are things in life that you simply cannot control no matter how hard you try. Don’t waste your time or your energy by trying to control every little thing that happens to you! You will never be able to enjoy life if you keep stressing yourself over those things that cannot be changed.
3 “I Promise I Will Look Only on the Bright Side.”
Always try to look on the bright side of things, so you won’t let all that negativity which resides in all of us interfere with your happiness. Promise to yourself that you will focus only on those things that make you smile and that you will appreciate the beauty of those small moments that make life worth living.
4 “I Promise I Will Appreciate Others for Who They Are.”
In order for you to be happy, you should try to appreciate others for who they are, just like you love both your qualities and your flaws. We are all human, we all make mistakes, so try not to expect more from people than you would expect from yourself. People are not always how or who they appear on the outside; even if they are laughing, they might be crying on the inside.
5 “I Promise I Will Speak Kindly to Myself.”
Always be kind to yourself! Use inspiring, encouraging and comforting words every time you speak to yourself. Be your biggest supporter and always believe in yourself! Don’t sabotage yourself or your happiness by being mean! Believe in yourself and be kind, because you can’t expect others to do it if you don’t do it yourself.
6 “I Promise I Will do What I Think It’s Right.”
You shouldn’t let others decide for you! Do what you think it’s right even if it isn’t always easy. Stick to your principles and follow your intuition! You are the sum of the choices you’ve made along the way, so whether they are good or bad, at least they are yours.
7 “I Promise I Will Have Fun No Matter What I do.”
Even if you work really hard to achieve all your dreams, don’t forget to have fun while you are doing it. Make your work more pleasant and bearable by bringing some joy into it. Be optimistic and don’t take yourself too seriously because you actually need to have fun to be successful.
8 “I Promise I Will Always Speak Kindly to Others.”
You shouldn’t only speak kindly to yourself; you should do it to others as well. Be respectful to everyone you meet, no matter what their social status is or how they can help you. Just like Samuel Johnson said: “The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good.”.
9 “I Promise I Will Choose My Battles Wisely.”
In life, you will get invited to or embroiled in a lot of battles. You should choose them wisely because you don’t need to prove anything to anyone. Just be true to yourself and assume responsibility for your choices. You don’t need to accept every challenge you are offered by others if you don’t feel that it’s something you want to do.
10 "I Promise I Will Love WholeHeartedly Always"
Falling is in love is a beautiful feeling and this year, I promise that I will fall in love wholeheartedly and give myself to whoever I love. Will that make me vulnerable? Of course, but it will be the best love in the world.
11 "I Promise Not to Judge Anyone"
This is something that every single one of us does: judge. It's something we do subconsciously, but what if you consciously give up judging others and instead, focus on yourself. You'll realize just how much drama is cleared and heck, you might make a few more friends!
12 "I Promise to do One Random Act Kindness a Month"
Giving to other people and brightening up someone's day truly makes the world better to live in. The Sandy Hook shooting last year really bonded together us as humans and started the random act of kindness -- so why not do one once a month? Or at least keep up the trend whenever you can? Buy some stranger coffee, give someone a ride home -- whatever it is, it makes a difference.
13 "I Promise to Connect to My Family More"
This promise is something that I believe everyone needs -- especially if they aren't close at all with their family. This could be family that you hardly see, family that you hardly talk about but you've always wanted to reach out to. Remember, when nobody is there for you, your family is, so why not reconnected and get close?
Try to keep these promises you’ll make to yourself because by doing this, you’ll be able to build a happier, healthier and more meaningful life for yourself and those around you. Have you made any promises to yourself? Have you kept them? What other promises should you make to yourself in order to live a happy and fulfilled life?
