This poem by Shel Silverstein contains one of the first quotes inspired by mermaids that I stumbled on. The line “But all the magic I have known, I've had to make myself” is very inspiring; Silverstein's point revolves around the fact that while his friends occupy themselves with searching for false feelings of merriment, he prefers to create his own concrete happiness. I took this to mean that you can't just rely on luck; only you can get yourself to where you want to be in life.

I am in awe of Anaïs Nin's insightful and inspiring words; not only did I use this as my college yearbook quote, I also have this line embedded on my wall.
