When you are lacking motivation, it’s all about finding unique ways to stick to a commitment so that you always complete the task at hand. It can be hard to push yourself to do something when your mind is trying to talk you out of it. If you’re anything like me, you play mind games with yourself, trying to convince yourself to do whatever it is that you want to do, rather than what you need to do. When you set goals for yourself, finding the motivation to carry out the commitment is often the greatest struggle. Try one of these seven ways to stick to a commitment the next time you find yourself lacking motivation in order to just keep going!
1. Pick Yourself Back up
When it comes to finding ways to stick to a commitment, no matter how many times you fall, always pick yourself back up. Although it might be challenging, you have made a commitment with either yourself or someone else, and therefore, you should see it through. Don’t let the fear of trying or the fear of failing keep you from completing your goals, instead, regardless of how many times you’ve tried and failed, never stop trying! Sooner rather than later, you will do it, just watch and see.
2. Change Your Behaviors
Sometimes no matter how badly we want something or how badly we want to do something, if we’re doing it the wrong way, it will never be done. Just like you would fix something if it was broken, try to fix your behaviors to better align with your goal or commitment. There is nothing wrong with taking a step back, reevaluating the situation and approaching it differently the next time.
3. Check Your Inner Thoughts
I’m sure you’ve been guilty of this a time or two as well - we are often our own worst critic. Tell yourself that you cannot do something and you won’t. On the other hand, tell yourself that you can do something and you will. In order to do what you want and need to do, it’s important to keep your thoughts positive and to remind yourself every day that you can do whatever it is that you want/need to do. Just go do it!
4. Find Support
Reaching out for support can be the difference in actually completing your commitment or not. We’re only human, therefore, none of us are perfect. It’s absolutely okay to ask for help whenever you need it. Often you will find that most people are more than willing to help you – it’s just up to you to ask!
5. Overcome Challenges
We are faced with new challenges every single day and when it comes to keeping your commitments, it’s vital that you find ways to overcome these challenges. Instead of giving up when things get tough, accept the challenge and do your very best. Look at challenges as opportunities for growth rather than negative obstacles. Use these times to refocus, rebuild and learn something new! No challenge is too big to overcome!
6. Revisit Your Goals
Whatever the commitment or goal may be, it’s important to always keep a clear definition of that goal in mind. Write down what you say you’re going to do and create a detailed map of how you are going to do it. A well-defined plan with clear understanding will better help you do what you say you’re going to do! Revisit this plan hourly, daily, weekly or however often you need to in order to stay motivated to do it!
7. Overcome Barriers
While you may not be able to avoid challenges, if barriers lie in the way of sticking to your commitment, sometimes it’s up to you to remove those barriers. What is preventing you from completing the task that could be decreased or removed all together? Take time to remove these barriers so that the task doesn’t seem so daunting after all.
Staying motivated to complete a commitment is all about keeping your eyes on the prize. What is it that you really want? With a well-defined plan and a positive attitude, you can do anything that you want to do! How do you regain motivation when all you feel like doing is giving up?
