9 Useful Tips on How to Be Kind That You Should Always Consider ...

It’s not that hard to learn how to be kind! Being kind can be best described as a way of living that can help you make more friends and help you live a happy, fulfilled and meaningful life. In UK, people even celebrate a kindness day on 13th of November. I absolutely love this quote by Mark Twain who said that “Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” Keep in mind his wise words and do your best in treating others with the proper amount of respect they deserve. If you want to learn how to be kind, just read on.

1

Define Kindness

The first thing you should do if you want to learn how to be kind is to understand what kindness means. Basically, kindness is about genuinely caring about other people’s needs and not about self-interested politeness used to manipulate people into giving you what you want. Kahlil Gibran said that “Tenderness and kindness are not signs of weakness and despair, but manifestations of strength and resolution.” and you should really pay attention to his wise words!

2

Be Kind to Yourself

In order to be kind with the people around, you should learn to be kind to yourself first. A lot of people think too much about other people’s needs and completely forget about their own. Don’t neglect yourself or your happiness! Don’t put everyone else first, love yourself and take some time once in a while to focus on your own needs and on fulfilling them!

3

Be a Good Listener

It is extremely important to be a good listener in order to be kind. If this doesn’t come to you naturally, you should know that it’s not hard to achieve it. There are a lot of books you can read or classes you can take (especially free online courses) on how to be a better and more attentive listener. Being busy is not an excuse for being unkind to people, because some might just need your attention every now and then and you should at least try to provide them that.

4

See the Good in Others

Of course, everybody makes mistakes sometimes, even you, but you shouldn’t let that affect your judgment and especially the way you treat other people. Try to see the good in everything, in everyone and banish all the negative thoughts that might prevent you from being kind. Keep a positive attitude, be optimistic and focus on the good things in life instead of dwelling on the negative ones!

5

Choose a Role Model

The best way to learn how to be more kind is by choosing a perfect role-model that will help and inspire you to achieve your goal. Think about what the kind people around you do and follow their example. Just by being kind, you can “make someone’s day”, so try to always keep that in mind. Reflect on the kindness of other people and see if you can replicate any of their kind actions or words!

Never Expect to Be Rewarded for Your Kindness

Princess Diana once said that you should “Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.”. Don’t expect to be rewarded for your kindness! Do it in order to make other people happy and not because you have something to benefit from it! Also you shouldn’t think that just because someone doesn’t tell you how much your act of kindness means to them, that they don’t appreciate it; they might choose to express their gratitude in a different way.

7

Be Polite

Politeness and kindness are very much alike. Even though, being polite doesn’t necessarily mean that you are also kind, genuine politeness means that you really care about other people’s well-being and that you are trying to show them the respect they deserve. Always, say thank you and please, make compliments and say I’m sorry when you are wrong. Use proper language when you talk to others and especially when you talk to yourself!

8

Help out

If you notice someone that might need your help, give them a hand and help them out. Simple gestures like helping an old lady cross the street, or helping someone carry their groceries can mean the world for some people. Make time to offer your help to others and think about other people’s well-being too. It wouldn’t require so much effort or time on your behalf and you would really make a difference in someone’s life.

9

Give Rather then Get

In order to learn how to be kind, you should try to focus more on giving rather than on receiving. Don’t help other people just because this will benefit you somehow; do it because you care about them and you are trying to make them feel happier! Be friendly and nice, even with the people who are mean to you, because your behavior might even make them change their attitude and treat you with the respect you deserve.

Try to always do at least one act of genuine kindness every day and turn this habit into a lifestyle choice. Do you find it hard sometimes to be kind? What make you feel this way? What other tips on how to be kind can you share with us? Do tell!
