1. Dance
It’s got to be scientifically proven that dancing helps enhance your mood almost instantly. Even if you’re not a great dancer or don’t really like dancing, don’t skip this tip. Dancing, no matter your skill level or willingness to do it, will instantly put you in a better mood.
2. Get out of Town
I’ve found that one of the most effective ways to cheer myself up when I’m in a rut is to just pack up and leave town for a few days if I can. If there are parts of your life that are insanely stressing you out but can be put on pause, pack up your things and get out of a town for a few days to somewhere you love. If the place that calms you is a big city, a beach, or mountains, you should just go wherever makes you happy.
Frequently asked questions
3. Do Something You Love
I love reading. However, with my schedule, I don’t get to read often. When I’m feeling immensely stressed out or just generally in a rut, though, I’ll stop what I’m doing and take an hour out of my day to just read. It immediately calms me down. If you have something you love but don’t get to do often enough, try to make some time for it!
4. Make a List of Your Accomplishments
When you’re in a rut, you can sometimes feel worthless or like you’ve never accomplished anything. (I think that’s also partly in thanks to the over-the-top braggers of social media, am I right?) If you often find yourself feeling like this, sit down and make a list of your accomplishments, whether it was over the past year or just in general. Seeing what you’ve done listed out will immediately make you a happier and more confident person.
5. Make a List of Things to Look Forward to
After you’ve made your list of accomplishments, make a list of goals and things you’re looking forward to. If you have a trip planned that you’re excited about, a holiday with family you’ve been planning forever, or your best friend’s wedding, writing out all of these different things to look forward to will make your mindset for the future much more positive.
6. Have a Good Cry
Crying is cathartic. That means that if you’re in a rut, having a good cry could help get you out of that rut. Turn on the movie that you know makes you absolutely sob, and let the movie do the work. Chances are that after that crying jag, you’ll feel instantly better and happier.
7. Surround Yourself with Friends
When you’re not in a great mood, friends are the people to turn to. Whether or not you tell them that you’re in a rut, just being surrounded by them will put you in a happier mood immediately.
