1. What Does Happiness Mean to You?
The first of the tips on how to be happy when things change that I will give you is to advise you to ask yourself what happiness actually means to you. What things need to change or what should you do in order to feel happier? Your definition of happiness may be different from someone else’s, so think very carefully about the things that would make you happy and discover what steps you would have to take in order to achieve your objective.
2. Adjust Your Standard for Happiness
If, for you, happiness means that you would live in a mansion and make a lot of money, try to adjust your standard for happiness and turn it into a more realistic one. Learn to enjoy the little things in life, because they are the most important, after all. You all know that famous saying that money can’t buy happiness. Well, it is true. Try to set some realistic goals, so you won’t get disappointed if you won’t be able to fulfill all your dreams. For example, if you want to have a six figure paycheck and you won’t succeed in obtaining that, change your standard for happiness to being able to provide for your family.

3. Exercise
I’m sure you are all familiar with the wonderful benefits of exercising on a regular basis! There are a lot of studies out there that have shown that, by exercising, you can significantly improve the quality of your life, and that sports act like a natural antidepressant by increasing the levels of the hormones responsible for your happiness. You shouldn’t give up this healthy habit, especially when things change in your life! Try to do at least a bit of exercising each day for at least half an hour, whatever you prefer, whether it’s jogging, Pilates or even walking.
4. Learn to Relax
Another thing everyone should know about adjusting to change and staying happy throughout that difficult period of time is the fact that you’ll need to learn how to relax a bit every now and then, so you’ll be able to decrease your anxiety and fight away your depression. You could learn a relaxation technique and practice it daily and you will see how much your emotional well-being will improve in no time. Most relaxation techniques are so easy to do and they don’t even require so much time from you, only about 10-15 minutes a day.
5. Let Go of Attachments
This advice is especially for those people who move to another location and find themselves to be far away from all their loved ones. Even though it’s not that easy, letting go of attachments is extremely important in order to be able to adjust to all the new changes that have occurred in your life and to find happiness in your new situation. I must admit that this is easier said than done, because most attachments are pretty strong, but if you try hard enough, you will realize that being happy is your choice. If you really want to have this attitude, you won’t let anything stand in the way of your happiness.
6. Train Your Brain to Think Happy Thoughts
You will become happier even when things change by training your brain to think happy thoughts. Your thoughts influence your language, your behavior and of course, your happiness. So, if you have noticed lately that you tend to see everything in a negative way, try to change that and train your brain to think more positively. In therapy, one of the most used techniques is cognitive restructuring, which is actually a psychotherapeutic process of learning to identify and dispute irrational or maladaptive thoughts. Find out how you can do this by searching for material online, at your public library or you could even see a therapist who will show you how you can do it.
7. Eat and Sleep Right
Pay attention to what you are eating and try to get enough sleep in order to feel happier when things change. You will make such a huge difference in the quality of your life and this will bring so many benefits to your mental health too. Try to eat in a more healthy way, by saying no to all the processed foods, to all the fried stuff and to all the sugary snacks. Also, don’t neglect the importance of sleeping right! Try to sleep for at least 7 hours per night, so that your body can heal and rest. You will see that once you get enough sleep and you will eat the right foods, you will feel happier, more relaxed and more active, even if a lot of things have changed in your life.
Coping with change can be a bit difficult sometimes, yet there are a lot of things you can do to feel better again. I just mentioned a few. Now it’s your turn! What other tips on how to be happy when things change can you share with us? Do tell!
