One key feature of passing into adulthood is learning to become more independent, standing on your own two feet and accepting there are more things now in your own personal remit. Being responsible means relying less on others and making things happen more for yourself. Becoming more independent is totally a good thing, but it can sometimes be hard to get out of the mind set of expecting other people to do things for you or expecting people to behave in a certain way. To help you see what I’m trying to get at, here are seven things you should stop expecting from others that will make you more independent and self-reliant.
The sooner you accept the fact that not everybody needs to agree with you, the better. Human beings are inevitably going to have differing opinions on lots of different subject, so try not to act superior and assume that everyone needs to be on your same wavelength.
2. More Respect than You Give Yourself
You need to focus on building up your own self value and self respect before you can expect others to respect you too. You shouldn’t expect to be respected by those around you if you don’t even respect yourself that much. Work on some self care.
3. To Be Liked
We’re not high school cheerleaders anymore, we don’t have to be liked by every single person that we meet. As long as you are happy with yourself and you like who you are as a person, why should you worry about what someone else thinks of you?
4. Expectations of Others
You need to stop expecting people to meet your own expectations of who you think they are because at the end of the day they don’t just exist to be part of your life; they are their own beings! Perhaps instead of heaping unrealistic expectations on people, you should just give them the same respect and freedom that you hope to get for yourself.
5. Reading Thoughts
Don’t expect people to know what you are thinking. As you get older, you are going to need to learn to be confident about conversing and communication with others using your words and your body language, rather than just relying on some sort of telepathic connection that doesn’t exist.
You can’t expect people to suddenly change for you. Humans are stubborn creatures, and they can’t adjust learned behaviours quickly just because somebody wants them to.
7. To Be Okay
You need to stop expecting that people are going be ‘okay’. It’s our job to check up on our loved ones to make sure that everyone is doing fine. Self care is important, and so is caring for those around you.
