If you want to live a happy and meaningful life I must draw your attention towards those stressful things to start ignoring from now on. You should be enjoying all the wonderful things that happen to you on a daily basis. Sometimes we can lose sight of what’s important for us and we allow ourselves to be overwhelmed by all the stress and all the problems we face at school, our jobs or at home. Even if we don’t have complete control over every little thing that happens in our lives, we can still choose what we want to internalize from what we experience. So, here are a few pretty stressful things to start ignoring so you can live your life to the fullest:

1. The Idea of Perfection
Let go of that idea of perfection. By always trying to achieve those high standards you established for yourself, you will only sabotage yourself and your happiness. Brené Brown, research professor at the University of Houston said that “Perfection is correlated with depression, anxiety, addiction, and life paralysis or missed opportunities. The fear of failing, making mistakes, not meeting people’s expectations, and being criticized keeps us outside the arena where healthy competition and striving unfolds.” That being said, this is definitely one of the most important things to start ignoring so you can learn how to be truly happy.
2. Toxic Friendships
From now on you should definitely start ignoring all those so-called friends who only call you when they need something from you or who will discredit you if you have the courage to follow your intuition. True friends should always be there by your side, no matter how busy they really are. Don’t allow those toxic people to prevent you from reaching your goals! Follow your dreams and start ignoring the things or the people who don’t deserve your attention or your appreciation.

3. Blatant Negativity
If you tend to only focus on the negative aspects of life, I should tell you that you can in fact control this dysfunctional habit by learning how to see the bright side of things. You can actually choose how you want to look at things by learning a few tricks which will help you change your perspective on life. Just like Marc Chernoff (one of those wonderful people who truly inspire me) said: “It’s better to be a lion for a day than a sheep all your life.”. As for the negative people in your life, don’t let them get to you! Try to smile, regardless of what they tell you. Just don’t let them bring you down because “Those who talk down to you are just trying to walk tall by making you feel small.” (Marc Chernoff).
4. Other People’s Unwanted Advice
There are a lot of people who think they know what’s best for you, but in most cases they are actually wrong because you are the only one who knows what will truly make you happy. Don’t let others decide for you and don’t let them take advantage of you because not everyone has good intentions. Pay attention to your real friends and follow your intuition! One of the most rewarding feelings of freedom is not caring what anyone else thinks of you.
5. The Idea That Everything Should Be Easy
Not everything in life should be easy because the people who are successful at what they do and who managed to fulfill all their dreams, are the ones who worked really hard and who dedicated themselves 100% to achieve all their goals. Don’t be afraid to fail because failure is in fact the greatest teacher you’ll ever have and losing can be also a learning experience. “Strength does not come from winning at everything…In the end, you are not what you have done, but what you have overcome.” (Marc Chernoff).

6. Your Materialistic Thinking
Try to ignore your ungrateful, materialistic thinking if you want to learn what true happiness is. As Epicurus, the famous Greek philosopher once said “Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.” You actually do not need all the things you want; you just think you do. There are other things that matter more in life than any of the riches you may obtain someday. Learn to enjoy the little things and be grateful for what you have!
7. Your Resistance to Change
Change is inevitable. You can’t run away from it. You just have to adapt to it and make the best out of every situation. Let go of that inner resistance to change, even if familiar things are more comfortable. Learn to appreciate the unexpected and enjoy the surprises your life offers you. Sometimes, the end of something good can be the beginning of something wonderful, so try to ignore all those worries caused by life’s uncertainty.
There are a lot of things which can interfere with your happiness if you give them too much credit. What other stressful things someone should start ignoring in order to live a happy and fulfilled life? Please tell us what you think in the comments section!
