Because sometimes, everyone feels like they don’t know who they are anymore because of all the compromises they have to make over the years, I thought it would be nice of me to give you a few tips on how to be yourself in any situation. This is especially important if, for a while, you’ve felt like you are actually in the wrong shoes. I love this little but very inspiring quote by Oscar Wilde, who once said “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” It’s actually not that hard to learn how to be yourself, you’ll just need to discover who you are now, then accept and acknowledge this wonderful person that you didn’t even know it existed deep down inside of you.
1 Find Yourself
The first thing you should do if you want to learn how to be yourself in any situation is to try to find yourself and define who you are on your own terms. Take some time and really think about yourself, about the things you enjoy and about the things you don’t really like. Contemplate your life and your choices! Think about your flaws and about different ways to improve certain aspects about your behavior. But, you should especially focus on the things that make you stand out from the crowd, on the things that only you can do and try to improve those too.
2 Let Go of Your past
If you want to learn how to feel comfortable with who you are and act like the real you in every situation, then you should let go of your past, avoid fixating on it too much and allow yourself to blossom. Think about who you are now, embrace who you were and focus on the wonderful person you wish to become. Don’t sabotage yourself by thinking about the things you did or about the things you didn’t do in your past! Allow yourself to grow and to become stronger, wiser. Forgive yourself for those bad decisions you made in your past and for all the mistakes you’ve made. Make sure you’ve learned your lesson and continue to grow!
3 Be Honest with Yourself!
We all have our own insecurities and certain things about ourselves we’re not so proud of, certain physical or emotional parts of us that we like to hide because we might think they are not perfect. Well, guess what? Nobody is! Everyone has their flaws and you should know that it’s actually a big difference between being way too critical and being honest with yourself. Learn to acknowledge your imperfections, and then try to turn them into your distinctive features. Accept what you can’t change about yourself and discover different ways you can improve certain aspects of your personality. Just don’t beat yourself up and don’t be your worst critic!
4 Learn to Relax
If you are a little bit shy or if you often feel insecure about the way you act, try to worry less about the things you suspect might happen in certain social situations if your behavior is misunderstood. Just relax! I know it’s easier said than done, but with a bit of practice and with a lot of patience, you will learn how to embrace who you are and even to laugh at yourself when something unflattering happens. If you accidentally screw up sometimes, then try to turn it into a funny story. Just loosen up and don’t take yourself too seriously!
5 Express Your Individuality
Don’t be afraid to express your individuality because you think you are too different or that others might not like you. Be proud of who you are and of the things you can do! Turn those unique features into your trademark features! Those are the things that make you so special and you should realize how lucky you are to have them. Just express yourself, your true self! There might be some people out there who will never like you, no matter what you do, but then again, there will always be people who will constantly disagree with others and who will never be satisfied about anything. So, don’t let those negative people or their mean words get to you! Be a character, not a type!
6 Improve Your Communication Skills
One of the best tips I could give you on how to always be yourself in any situation is to advise you to improve your communication skills. Be a better, more attentive listener! There are so many books out there that can help you become a more empathetic person and increase your emotional intelligence! The better you communicate, the more you will act like your true self in every situation.
7 Don’t Compare Yourself to Others!
Everyone is different and precisely those differences are the ones that make people so special. If you’re always trying to be someone who you are obviously not, then you’ll never be a happy person. Don’t compare yourself to others! After all, you never know how the others are really like, because you only see what they want you to see. Don’t forget, comparison often leads to resentment and by always thinking about how lucky other people are, you’ll forget about the things that make you special and unique.
So, these were my tips on how to find yourself, how to accept who you are and how to act the way you feel. Do you sometimes strive to be someone you’re not? What makes you do it? Can you give us any other tips on how to be yourself in any situation? Do tell!
