1. Make a List
What is it that you want? How about what you don’t want? One of the best ways to live your best life is to know yourself! One way you get to know other people is by asking them questions. Do that for yourself too, in writing. Make a plan, and start by finding out who you are. If you’ve done this in the past, you might be surprised to find out how different the list is this time around. Keep your lists, and as you check in with yourself every once in a while, compare the lists. It’s sort of a map of where you’ve been to where you’re going!
2. Attitude is Everything
Act like you already have what you are striving for in your life. Do you want to graduate from college? Imagine what it feels like to be holding that diploma. Do you want the job of your dreams? Feel what it would be like to walk into that space every day. Remember, if you can truly imagine it, you can become it!
Frequently asked questions
3. Get a Mentor
Is there someone in your life living the existence you want? As the saying goes, there is no truer form of flattery than copying their lead. Ask them about their life. How did they begin, when did they decide on what they wanted, how did they start, and how do they continue to live this life? Ask them for advice to someone just starting out. Ask them if they would agree to be your mentor, as you move through the steps to get to where you want to be. Not only is this a great way for you to get an education on the life you want to lead, it’s also an excellent way to stay on track. If you have someone who will be watching your moves whom you respect, you will work more diligently to keep going.
4. Visualize It
There is a well-known story about Jim Carrey. Before he hit the big time, he wrote a check out to himself for ten million dollars. He taped it to the ceiling above his bed, so every night when he went to sleep, and every morning when he woke up, this was the first thing that he saw. A few years later, he was offered the lead role in his first big leading movie role, ‘The Mask,’ for ten million dollars! Grab a stack of magazines and colored pencils. Next, get an inexpensive piece of poster board. What do you want in your life? If it’s a healthy body, put a headless photo of that on your board so you can imagine it’s you. Do you want a great desk job? Put a picture of someone happily working at a desk on your board. Do you want to travel? Put some photos of your favorite locales on your board. If you don’t find it in a magazine, use your pencils to draw it. No points will be taken off for lack of artistic ability!
5. Baby Steps
Learning is about two steps forward, and one back. Don’t worry if you have some back slides. Just keep encouraging yourself, and keep going. You can do it! Just don’t let the voices from the past, asking you who you think you are and who told you that you can do this, guide your future. They’ve had enough of your attention already. Now it’s time to start listening to the voices that tell you that you are wonderful and amazing, and can do whatever you set your mind to!

6. Be Flexible, Yet Stay the Course
Part of living your best life is to realize that life changes with each new experience we have. This might also change your ideas of what you want, and that’s ok too. Accept that some of your goals may have changed, while you still stay committed to working towards the life you know you’ll love!
7. Ask Yourself Questions
Ask yourself why you wanted to move to the Big City, get married by a certain age, become an interior designer, etc. While you may have thought you wanted to live a certain life, perhaps what you really wanted were the things you thought you would get out of living that life. Be honest with yourself, reevaluate your wants and needs, and determine if the path you’re on is the one that will lead you to the goals you really want deep down.
Living your best life is an admirable goal. With some hard work and direction, you can get there. Just stay focused, stay energized, and believe in yourself! What advice would you give your friends if they were looking to make a change to their lives towards their goals?
