There is just something so captivating about these magical creatures that always leads me to scouring the Internet for quotes inspired by mermaids. I've always been intrigued by tales focusing on these mythical figures, often describing in great detail the power behind their luring songs, and the envy humans have to be like them. Growing up, watching Disney's “The Little Mermaid” was one of my favorite past-times – I love hearing about these creatures of the deep blue sea. These in-depth quotes inspired by mermaids surely speak for themselves.
“Magic
Sandra’s seen a leprechaun,
Eddie touched a troll,
Laurie danced with witches once,
Charlie found some goblins gold.
Donald heard a mermaid sing,
Susy spied an elf,
But all the magic I have known
I've had to make myself.”
This poem by Shel Silverstein contains one of the first quotes inspired by mermaids that I stumbled on. The line “But all the magic I have known, I've had to make myself” is very inspiring; Silverstein's point revolves around the fact that while his friends occupy themselves with searching for false feelings of merriment, he prefers to create his own concrete happiness. I took this to mean that you can't just rely on luck; only you can get yourself to where you want to be in life.
“I'm always happy when I'm surrounded by water, I think I'm a mermaid or I was a mermaid. The ocean makes me feel really small and it makes me put my whole life into perspective… it humbles you and makes you feel almost like you’ve been baptized. I feel born again when I get out of the ocean.”
I love reading about singer Beyoncé Knowles' perspective on the mermaid. It is such a great thought to resonate with. She views swimming in the ocean as a way of starting over; a feeling that I think all people should have a chance to experience.
“If you swim effortlessly in the deep oceans, ride the waves to and from the shore, if you can breathe under water and dine on the deep treasures of the seas; mark my words, those who dwell on the rocks carrying nets will try to reel you into their catch. The last thing they want is for you to thrive in your habitat because they stand in their atmosphere where they beg and gasp for some air.”
This quote by C. JoyBell C. is a bit haunting but true. Envy in the heart of strangers and friends alike can be a powerful and dark thing; it is sad to see that some people would rather see you fall to the bottom than be successful. This is why it is imperative that you strive to achieve your goals with the greatest effort and ignore all of the naysayers.
“I think every little girl's dream is to be a mermaid or to see a mermaid. [When I was younger] I would go to the beach and cover myself in the sand. People from different cultures and centuries have the same idea of what mermaids are ... so that's maybe a cool thing to think about.”
As cliché as this may sound, it's pretty cool to think that there is one thing that shows there is no barrier separating races and cultures. Also, I really like thinking that I am not the only person who is obsessed with mermaids; in my opinion, Emma's words show that a love of mermaids should be universal!
“I must be a mermaid, Rango. I have no fear of depths and a great fear of shallow living.”
This is my absolute favorite quote of all time. You should never be afraid of following your dreams despite the obstacles you may face along the way. I am in awe of Anaïs Nin's insightful and inspiring words; not only did I use this as my college yearbook quote, I also have this line embedded on my wall.
“Every day we face challenges. Don’t be afraid. Conquer your fears, face your insecurities, hold your breath and dive deeper.”
The overall point behind this quote by “Mermaid for hire” Melissa is that although success may not come easy, you will be happier knowing that you had to work hard for it. Don't let fear stop you from accomplishing your goals!
“I sat upon a promontory,
And heard a mermaid, on a dolphin's back,
Uttering such dulcet and harmonious breath,
That the rude sea grew civil at her song;
And certain stars shot madly from their spheres,
To hear the sea-maid's music.”
These lines are uttered by Oberon in Act II, Scene I of William Shakespeare's “A Midsummer Night's Dream”. It is cool to think that the mermaid's voice was so lovely that everyone and everything stopped to listen. If only it were easy to obtain this power in reality!
I have always been moved by the thought of these majestic and free beings and what they stand for in regards to the positive aspects of life. I am always in search of different sources of literature and media that let's me learn more about these intense creatures. What are some of your favorite empowering quotes inspired by mermaids?
