7 Important Things You Should Stop Expecting from Others ...

By Corina

If you want to avoid feeling disappointed by other people’s actions or words, you must know that there are a few things you should stop expecting from others in order to reduce any unnecessary frustration. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes it’s good to have certain expectations, because they will bring you hope and they’ll chase away any doubts you might have, but there are things you just can’t control and you shouldn’t let them interfere with your happiness. Try to focus on the things that really matter in life and see only the glass half-full. Here are a few things you should stop expecting from others that you should be aware of, because if you manage to change certain unhealthy expectations in your life, you will open yourself up to new things and you’ll even allow yourself to enjoy all kinds of new experiences.

1 Stop Expecting People to like You

In my opinion, this is one of the most important things you should stop expecting from others. If you think about it, it’s quite impossible to be liked by everyone you meet. There will always be negative people who will say mean things to or about you. Learn to ignore them and surround yourself with people who really value your opinion and make you feel loved and accepted. Be yourself in every situation, no matter what other people say or think!

2 Stop Expecting People to Be Perfect

This unrealistic expectation will only get you disappointed. Nobody’s perfect, not even you, so why would you ask that from other people? Everybody makes mistakes; after all, we are only human. Expect others to fail and help them prevent that, if you can. Don’t be so upset if somebody didn’t show perfection in their actions or in their words. Be understanding and try to be more empathetic!

3 Stop Expecting People to Agree with You

People are different and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Some might not agree with yours and this is not a thing that should make you seek approval from everyone around you. Stop comparing yourself with other people and learn to value your own opinions or decisions. You should be satisfied with your actions and never regret doing anything. Don’t try to please everyone because you’ll never succeed doing it. Follow your own path and have a little more trust in yourself!

4 Stop Expecting People to Read Your Mind

No one can read minds, thus nobody will know what you are really thinking unless you tell them what that is. They could guess, but most of the time they’ll get it wrong and they’ll risk offending you. Learn to communicate efficiently and express your desires, so nobody will have to guess them anymore.

5 Stop Expecting People to Change

Learn to love and accept people just the way they are without constantly trying to change them in order to suit your needs. Would you change just because someone tells you to? Allow people to be who they really are and you’ll see that you start seeing them from a new and different perspective. If you really want to change someone, you could start with yourself. I’m sure you all know that famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi: “Be the change you wish to see in the world!” Go ahead, set an example and inspire people!

6 Stop Expecting People to do the Right Thing

Life isn’t always fair and people don’t always do the right thing. Your morals and your values will not always be the same as other people's. Learn to accept that and don’t be so disappointed the next time someone’s behavior might not rise to your expectations. The right thing for them might be precisely what they did do. That’s why you should always try to clarify first what is acceptable and what is not, so there won’t be any misunderstandings.

7 Stop Expecting People to Drop Everything for You

Learn to be independent and don’t rely on other people so much! Everyone has bad days and your friends and family shouldn’t drop everything they’re doing every time you’re facing a problem or a new challenge. I know that a bit of support from your loved ones will help you a lot, but you shouldn’t abuse their love and ask them to give up on everything just to be by your side every time you are having a small crisis. Be strong and try to take care of your own problems!

People rarely act the way you expect them to act and most of the time, they don’t even know what you want from them. Try to notice when you are asking too much or when you need to ask for more, and find the right balance between your expectations and what you have to offer. Have you ever expected too much from other people? Have you been disappointed if those expectations were unrealistic?
