Corina

There are actually a lot of habits that will make your life simpler. More and more people realize that simpler is better, and that’s why they are doing their best to get rid of all the clutter from their lives. Happiness does lie in the little things, so why not make your life simpler? Just like Henry David Thoreau said, “As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler; solitude will not be solitude, poverty will not be poverty, nor weakness weakness.” Simplicity actually reduces heaviness in life and just like Confucius said, “Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.” Here are a few very important habits that will make your life simpler that you should definitely consider if you want to learn how to enjoy the little things in life:

1. Plan Your Week in Advance

This is definitely one of the most important habits that will make your life simpler that you should adopt! Use a calendar or a daily planner and plan your entire week in advance. This way, you will know what you have to do and when you have to do it and you will be more likely to do your work at the right time if you have scheduled it in your calendar. You will be more organized and you won’t feel so stressed out anymore, because a calendar is “the number one tool to beat procrastination.”

2. Get Rid of All the Clutter from Your Life

In order to simplify your life, you must know that you need to get rid of all the clutter from your house and from your life. Clean your home and your office regularly and just throw out all the unnecessary stuff, like things you don’t need, don’t use or don’t like anymore. Instead of throwing them away, if they are still in a good shape, you could donate them to a charity, so other people could use them. You will feel lighter and by getting rid of all those things you don’t need, you’ll have less cleaning to do, thus you will have more time to spend doing things you enjoy.

Frequently asked questions

3. Disconnect

Allow yourself to relax every once in a while. Just disconnect from all the things that cause you a lot of stress, disconnect from all electronics and make some time for yourself. Spend some quality time out in nature and just enjoy the beauty this world has to offer. Turn this into a habit and do it regularly, so you can relax, feel calmer and simply recharge your batteries.

4. Cook More Food than You Would Eat

Make a habit out of cooking more food than you would normally eat at a single meal. By making 5 or 6 servings of what you usually eat, you will spend less time cooking, you will have fewer dishes to wash and you will have something to eat the next day when maybe you won’t have the time to cook something healthy. You could even put a portion or two in the freezer and they will really come in handy on those days when you won’t feel like cooking.

5. Write Everything down

Try to write down every little thing you have to do and all the things you have to keep in mind. This way, you won’t spend time trying to remember all kinds of things and then feel stressed because you can’t remember them or because you fear that you might leave out something important. Just help yourself, write down your ideas before they fly off and focus on the present!

6. Learn to Say “No”

It’s essential to learn how to say no if you want to make your life simpler. It’s important to help other people but sometimes you just can’t or you just don’t have the time to do it, so don’t take too many responsibilities and think of yourself every now and then. There’s nothing wrong with saying no, just get into the habit of putting yourself and your family first.

7. Live in the Present

Make a habit out of living in the present! Enjoy the present moment and be grateful for what you have! Just like Lao Tzu said, “If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the moment.” Happiness does not come from more possessions, it comes from within, so learn to enjoy the little things in life and make your life simpler.

Albert Einstein once said that, “Possessions, outward success, publicity, luxury - to me these have always been contemptible. I believe that a simple and unassuming manner of life is best for everyone, best for both the body and the mind,” and he couldn’t be more right! I like the part where you said "disconnect" and " learn how to say no". That is what I try to work on lately.
