1. Discipline

One of the most important characteristics to be successful in life is discipline. It’s one thing to be motivated or inspired to do better, but without discipline it means nothing. However, discipline is a difficult characteristic to attain since it requires a lot of patience, sacrifice, and pushing yourself. This is definitely a characteristic I wish I had!

2. Positive Outlook

What you put into the world is what you will get back and that includes your attitude and outlook. If you’re a pessimist or have a negative perspective then expect everything around you to also be pretty crappy. However, if you try to always see the silver linings, you will find more opportunity for yourself and you’ll also find positive, supportive people who want you to succeed.

3. Patience

Rome wasn’t built in a day! Anything in life that’s worth having takes a lot of hard work over an extended period of time. You must be patient with yourself, your work load, and the people around you. When the time is right everything will fall into place. Until then, you must work your way towards your goal regardless of how long it takes.

4. Pride

Too much pride can be a bad thing, but just the right amount is key to being successful in life. When you believe you’ve done a job well done then don’t be modest. Instead, be prideful of your work. When you believe in the quality of your work and take pride in it then other people will start to also believe in you and be proud to have you on their team.

5. No Ego

There’s a difference between having a healthy self esteem and too much self esteem. Being overly confident can make you look cocky; therefore, people will be less willing to work with you or help you. It’s important to know your value and what you deserve and not assume everything should be handed to you.

6. Willingness to Learn

If there’s something you want in life, not only do you have to work to get it but you have to learn how to get it. That means that you have a lot to learn from others, whether it be from superiors, mentors, or family and friends. Willingness to learn doesn’t only mean that you're willing to accept advice, but also that you're willing to learn from your mistakes and accept constructive criticism.

7. Integrity

Although it’s easy to cheat to get to the top, it’s not the honest way. It’s always important to have high morals when it comes to everything in life. Honesty is a rare but well appreciated trait. In addition, the easy thing and the right thing aren’t always the same thing, so remember to take the high road rather than the easy road!

Most of these things are easier said than done but it’s worth a try. Take some time to honestly evaluate yourself and see which of these characteristics you have and where some of your opportunities are. What are other characteristics one should have in order to be successful?
