1. Meditate
One of the best tips I could give you on how to overcome negative thoughts is to meditate, do Yoga or you could even learn a few relaxation techniques and practice them on a daily basis. By doing this, you will concentrate on your breathing, on the way you are feeling (and that is, relaxed) and you won’t focus anymore on all the negative things that come to your mind uninvited. This way, you’ll also avoid thinking about what could go wrong in the future and you will live in the present, just like you should be doing every single day.
2. Surround Yourself with Positive People
Another best way to overcome all those negative thoughts that can’t seem to disappear is by surrounding yourself with positive people. You’ll see that in time, all their positivity will rub off on you. So what are you waiting for? Call a friend or a family member every time you feel overwhelmed by all the negative things in your life and you’ll see how much better you’ll feel in an instant. Positive people will help you put things into perspective and by their positive behavior and attitude, they won’t be feeding you negative thinking.
Frequently asked questions
3. Don’t Victimize Yourself!
Don’t fall in negativity’s trap by playing the victim’s part! Take responsibility for your actions and for your thoughts! You can control them even though this seems very hard at first. Thinking and acting like a victim will get you nowhere, so don’t sabotage yourself by always playing the victim. Try playing the hero for once and see how that feels!
4. Smile More Often!
Even if you think you don’t have so many reasons to smile lately, try to do it anyway! Smiling is the best antidote for sadness and for negative thinking, so do it more often! Here is a little exercise you can practice every single day: every morning when you wake up, look at yourself in the mirror and simply smile. Even though at first you might not be in the mood to do it, smile and you’ll see that your thoughts will be influenced by your behavior and your mood will significantly improve.
5. Change the Tone of Your Thoughts
Another best way to overcome all those negative thoughts that manage to sneak into our minds is by changing the tone of our thoughts from negative to positive. So, instead of thinking how hard it will be to adjust to that new situation in your life, you could try thinking how wonderful it would be that you will have to go on a couple of new adventures and how good you will feel after you will overcome all the obstacles that you will encounter in your way.
6. Journal of Positive Events
This is one of the most efficient and most used psychotherapeutic techniques, which offers great results in a very large variety of affective disorders like anxiety, depression, or eating disorders, but you can also use it in order to learn how to live a happy, fulfilled and meaningful life. It consists of keeping a journal, in which you are supposed to write only the good things that happen to you that day, no matter how big or small those events are. This way, you’ll see only the glass half-full and all those negative thoughts that usually come into your mind will start to slowly disappear.
7. Read Inspirational Material
In order to overcome all those negative thoughts that have started to cause you a lot of problems lately, you could try making a habit out of reading some inspirational material or you could watch some inspirational videos. Read positive quotes, write them down on post-it notes and stick them somewhere you will have them in sight, like next to you monitor, on your mirror or next to your bed.
Remember to stay positive in every situation, no matter how difficult it may seem at first. Things will seem so much easier if you will only change your thoughts from negative to positive.
