1

Try Different Things

How can you decide what you want to do with your life when you have no idea what you really enjoy? Try out different jobs, even if they’re just part-time during vacation, or going to work with your parents for the day, so you get a feel for what you enjoy. And trying new things isn’t just restricted to work situations, either. Try new hobbies and activities, because you may discover a new passion and you don’t know where it could take you!

2

Be Inspired by Others

You could access some blogs online, or read an autobiography by someone that inspires you. Maybe you’re even lucky enough to be truly inspired by someone you know, and could speak to him or her directly. However you do it, get inspired! If you know how they discovered their dream and achieved it, it might help you find yours.

3

Volunteer

There are few better ways to find help to decide what you want to do with your life than to volunteer in your community. Who knows what talents or skills you may discover that you never knew you had? And, it will enhance your CV, ready for when you do know what you want to do.

4

Write a 5-year Plan

Sit down and write about where you want to be in five years time, not just directly in your job but in everything else in your life too. Try and go into as much detail as possible, because the more detail, the more helpful it will be. Once you know where you want your life to lead, you can start thinking about how you’re going to get there.

5

Read Self-help Books

Even for those of you skeptical about self-help books, ones of this kind could be helpful. This is because they will offer practical advice from people who have actually been in your situation.

Famous Quotes

Men in general judge more from appearances than from reality. All men have eyes, but few have the gift of penetration.

Ask Your Loved Ones

Friends and family may have noticed skills and qualities in you that you have never recognized yourself, so speak to them and see if they have any suggestions about what could be a good career path. It would be silly to worry you can’t decide what to do with your life when someone close by has had the answer all along!

7

Send an Email Questionnaire

If you feel a bit silly asking those you love directly, put it out there in an email. This way, you could also ask teachers, lecturers or even employers if they have any ideas, as they will have a very different take on your skills.

8

Don’t Pile the Pressure on

If you’re putting pressure on yourself to make a decision, then the idea centre in your brain will shut down because you’ll be stressed. Try to take it easy: there’s no hurry to make a decision!

9

Don’t Avoid Awkward Situations

Ok, so you can’t decide what to do with your life, but you do know that you don’t want to attend awkward community events and social gatherings. But you should go to them! Things like this are character-building, and you have no idea of the networking opportunities that could arise.

10

Focus on Learning

Possibly the best advice for someone asking how to decide what to do in life is to try and learn something new from every situation! You don’t know what you could learn about yourself along the way.

All in all, if you make the most of the advice here, and trust your instincts along the way, when you decide what you want to do with your life, it shouldn’t be anywhere near as difficult as it first appeared. What helps inspire you about your future?

This is so cute

I suggest reading the happiness hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt as it questions many things about how people attempt to make themselves happy through religion, philosophy, psychology, science - drugs such as Prozac, etc. I found it interesting :-)

@Kristen Some of life's greatest lessons are gleamed in self help books. Looking at the sorry state of affairs in our society, many could benefit from self-help of some sort :)

Awful!! Self help books are statistically one of the greatest scams in our culture.

Whilst studying I really enjoyed working for this quaint coffee shop where the managers wife was the co-owner with her friend. It felt good making people feel good and being appreciated. Maybe one day when I have enough money I might buy my own little coffee shop.. :-)

Awsome

I don't know, you have to be careful with the self-help books. A lot of them are pretty useless. Some may be reassuring, most are probably not dangerous, but I was buying for both help with anxiety and help with a job hunt and most of the time, I felt like I had set my money on fire. Especially with e-books, there are way more people selling advice than there really should be.

I'm not sure about how helpful it is to ask others as my family and friends didn't think I would move abroad and be ok. If you feel it in your gut then go for it!
