  2. Connect
  3. Find your fit
  4. Time out
  5. Do your best
  6. Be committed
  7. Look forward

1 Be Organised

One of the simplest ways to be happier at work is to arrive on time, or even early. Being in a rush and missing your bus means that you'll be stressed before you've even arrived at work. Get organised the night before by preparing your work outfit and bag. Set the alarm to wake up early enough for a shower and breakfast. Then leave the house early enough to allow time for traffic. You'll arrive at work feeling calm, instead of looking at your watch.

2 Connect

Make an effort to connect with co-workers and customers. A smile and a few words is pleasant for everyone. Customers will respond positively to a friendly face and greeting. Equally, if you are brusque with them they will respond likewise. Chat with your co-workers when you get a chance; work is much nicer when you get on with people there.

3 Find Your Fit

Everybody finds some aspects of their job more interesting and satisfying than others. Try to spend as much time as possible on the tasks you enjoy. You may find that your favorite task is something another person dreads - if so, do a swap. This does depend on a certain flexibility in your workplace, but your bosses may not mind who does what, as long as it's done!

4 Time out

It's important to take time out from work and enjoy it. When you're refreshed after a vacation or the weekend, you're more inclined to approach work positively. Of course, it's not fun going back to work after time out, but at least you've had the chance to recharge. So when you're away from work, switch off completely from work matters and make the most of your free time.

5 Do Your Best

Your job may not be particularly interesting or a 'career' option; sometimes we have to do what pays the bills, but you can find some satisfaction in doing the best you can. Even if your work involves mundane tasks, adopt a philosophy that you are going to do them well. It may also lead to promotion if you show a determination to do your job well.

6 Be Committed

You don't have to approach your job as if it were the only thing worth having in your life. But when you are at work, you are being paid for a specific purpose. If you decide that your job is boring, you won't be committed to it. And you can't enjoy something you're not committed to. So even if it's not something you really enjoy, focus on work matters during the time you're there.

7 Look Forward

Perhaps you're not too happy at work because it's just a means of paying the bills. Well, a good job is not going to fall into your lap, so if you want something better you're going to have to work for it. Improve your skills or study for some qualifications. Show your bosses that you've got the drive and the talent to go further.

When you spend 40 hours a week at work, you want to be reasonably happy with your job. It's certainly not easy to change careers these days, so often the only option in sticking with the job you have. Sometimes a change of outlook can make your job seem better and allow you to feel happier. What would you do if you were unhappy with your job?
