The Simplest Things That Cheer You Up on a Gray Winter Day
By Alicia • Jan 15, 2015 MD

Do you need some things to cheer you up on a gray winter day? I am totally with you. Winter isn't my favorite season, either. When the sky turns a yucky gray yet again, finding stuff to cheer you up can make all the difference. I've found some proven ways to boost my mood, and I hope these ideas help you find something to cheer you up, too. Here is my go-to list for surviving the winter blues:

  • Getting cozy at home
  • Treating yourself to a warm drink
  • Connecting with friends
  • Staying active

1. Cozy Jammies

While I am not a winter fan, there are a few things about the season that I do enjoy. Cozy jammies are certainly one of them. After coming in out of the cold, few things feel better than putting on your favorite pair of warm pajamas. You can grab a good book or get into watching a good movie, and you will feel better in no time. This is one simple way to cheer yourself up from the winter blues. If you need inspiration for things to watch, check out our guide to comfort movies.

2. A Trip to Starbucks

A trip to Starbucks makes any day better, including a grey winter day. While grabbing a coffee is good any time of year, it seems more special when it is freezing outside. There is just nothing like enjoying a yummy drink while letting your hands absorb the warmth from the cup. My current favorite Starbucks choices are white hot chocolate and hot chocolate with a shot of raspberry. If you are looking for something different to try, I highly recommend both of those options.

3. Bake Some Cookies

How can you be sad with the smell of fresh baked cookies in the house? While these might not align perfectly with your fitness goals, I guarantee they are good for your mood. It is hard to be sad when you have your favorite cookie and a tall glass of milk nearby. If you want to be sure you do not eat too many, only bake a couple at a time. This is a perfect treat for a cold winter evening, especially when paired with the cozy jammies mentioned in point 1.

4. Get out of the House

Sometimes you feel down because you have been home too much. That tends to happen more in the winter when the weather can trap you indoors. If the roads are not dangerous, bundle up and get out for a while. You can go shopping, visit a local museum, or see a movie. Even getting out to do some basic errands can cheer you up and break the monotony of the day. Here are a few simple ideas to get you out of the house:

| Activity | Time Needed | Cost | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Local Museum | 2-3 hours | Low/Free | | Coffee Shop Run | 30 minutes | Low | | Window Shopping | 1-2 hours | Free |

Getting a change of scenery is a reliable way to reset your mindset.

Embrace the vibrant colors and cozy vibes of the upcoming season with your loved ones. Planning for some memorable fall family photos is a unique way to capture the warmth and love amidst the breathtaking autumnal hues. Trust me, these keepsakes would be beyond beautiful.

5. Call a Friend

When you are feeling down in the dumps, little can cheer you up like talking to one of your closest friends. Call up a friend and chat about what has been going on in your life. More than likely, you will share some laughs along with all the latest updates. It is always heartwarming to catch up with a friend. Not only will you feel better after the call, but your friend probably will, too.

6. Exercise

This one probably is not the most fun choice, but it will make you feel better, both physically and mentally. According to the American Psychological Association, exercise releases endorphins in your brain, which are chemicals that naturally make you feel happier. Not only that, but you will reap long-term health benefits, too. If you are really not in the mood to exercise, tell yourself you can quit after 10 minutes. More than likely, you will be pumped for a full workout by then. Exercise pairs perfectly with getting out of the house, which I mentioned in point 4.

7. Plan Your Vacation

Dreaming of soaking up the sun while you feel the sand between your toes may be just what you need to cheer up. You have all this extra time when you are stuck indoors, right? Make good use of it by planning your next getaway. I love planning for vacations because researching destinations is often half the fun, and I am sure some of you feel the same way. You can even browse Tripadvisor for inspiration on where to go next. If you need tips on packing, read our guide on the best packing hacks.

These are some things to cheer about on a gray winter day. What do you do to get rid of the winter blues? I would love to hear your ideas.

Love the cosy jammies part - I reckon nice warm pjs and slippers are the best in winter ☺️
