7 Writers to Look at for Inspiration when You're in a Rut ...

By Teresa

There are so many awesome, female writers to look at for inspiration when you’re in a rut. As writers, we all have those days where we just can’t get out of a rut. Whether it’s writer’s block or we just don’t like what we’re writing, it happens to the best of us. When I have one of those days, I try reading some of my favorite female authors’ bodies of work. I don’t think it’s any surprise just how beneficial it is to read work by your favorite writers to look at for inspiration when you’re in a rut. They’ll inspire you easily and you’ll be back on your way in no time! Some of these writers are my personal favorites, and others are beloved by the world, but I assure you that you will find an author that will help you out of your rut!

Nora Ephron

Nora Ephron Everyone has seen a Nora Ephron movie, even if you don’t think you’ve ever seen a Nora Ephron movie. She’s mostly known for her movies, but she also wrote absolutely hilarious books. Whenever I need a little pep or pick-me-up in my writing, I pick up one of her books. I think she is one of the most beneficial writers to look at for inspiration when you’re in a rut because her work is so diverse! I’m pretty sure she dabbled in almost everything throughout her writing career.

2

Mindy Kaling

Mindy Kaling Mindy Kaling’s accomplishments are somewhat similar to Nora Ephron’s in that she’s dabbled in almost everything. Not only did she create one of the funniest shows on television this fall (The Mindy Project, I highly suggest you watch it), she also acted as a writer on The Office for eight years. Since The Office is one of my favorite shows, she’s always been a super inspirational writer to me. If you’ve never come across her work, though, I suggest you read her debut novel. When you finish it you will be torn between wanting to be her best friend and wishing you had written the book instead.

J.K. Rowling

J.K. Rowling I don’t even think I need to explain what’s so inspiring about J.K. Rowling, especially to struggling writers, but I will anyway. She’s become the ultimate “rags-to-riches” writer story, as I’m sure everyone has heard the myth that she began the Harry Potter series on a napkin. Yes, it’s a myth, but the rest of her story is not. She went from a destitute, single mother with an idea for a story to the first billionaire author. If that doesn’t inspire you to write the next great series, I don’t know what will!

4

Emily Dickinson

Emily Dickinson is especially important for all of the poets out there. Even if you aren’t a poet, you will be so inspired by simply indulging in the beauty of Emily Dickinson’s words. One of my favorite poems by her, especially when I’m in a rut, is “Success is counted sweetest.” Believe me, it will inspire you even in the lowest of lows.

5

Tavi Gevinson

Tavi Gevinson Many people don’t know who Tavi Gevinson is yet. Believe me, you will one day, and that day is very soon. She started a blog at age twelve that turned into a print magazine-type book called Rookie at age seventeen. Judd Apatow, Lena Dunham, Paul Rudd, and Joss Whedon contribute to it, just to name-drop a little bit. Even though she’s younger than me (and probably most of the audience reading this), I think there’s so much to be learned from her. I read her work about a year ago, before I knew anything about her, and was blown away by her talent. Regardless of her age, she is immensely talented, and definitely someone to look at for inspiration when you’re stuck in a writing rut.

Famous Quotes

Love is like a friendship caught on fire. In the beginning a flame, very pretty, often hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. As love grows older, our hearts mature and our love becomes as coals, deep-burning and unquenchable.

Jane Austen

Jane Austen Jane Austen has written some of the most classic books our world will ever see. Pick up one of her books, maybe your favorite by her, and immerse yourself in it. It’s impossible not to find yourself inspired by her and her work. She and her books could probably be filed under the definition of “classic” in the dictionary.

7

Lena Dunham

While Lena Dunham may seem like an unconventional choice for a list mostly comprised of authors, I thought she was important regardless. She may not be an author of books (yet, there’s one in the works), but she definitely knows what she’s doing in the TV and film world. Not many twenty-six-year-olds sell their TV show to HBO. Not only is she a great writer to look at for inspiration when you’re in a rut, but she also gives you an excuse to watch Girls when you’re in said rut! That’s a win in my book!

Which of these writers is your favorite? Which of these writers will you look to for inspiration the next time you’re in a rut? Let me know in the comments!
