If you’ve been looking for ways to be more spiritual or simply to open up to the unknown in your life, there's no better time to start than right now. Whether you’ve grown up with a spiritual background, a religious one or none at all, it doesn’t matter. You wouldn’t be human if you weren’t curious. So, make yourself a nice cup of green tea and read these eight ways to be more spiritual in your life.
1. Sit in Nature
One of the easiest ways to be more spiritual is to sit directly in nature and look around. Take a blanket, a notebook and pen and some water and find a lovely park somewhere quiet and see what comes to you. Write it down. Literally becoming grounded like this helps you to slow down and take in the beauty of nature and what it means to you. Finding a way to connect to nature is a good first step to discovering your spiritual side.
Meditating can seem hard. You’re sitting with your legs crossed on a hard-ish surface trying not to think. This isn’t exactly your idea of a good time. I get it. If sitting sounds horrible, try lying down on a couch. Keep your legs and arms uncrossed and take slow long breaths in through your nose for five counts and out through your mouth for ten. Evening out your breathing can help you relax and allow your subconscious to come through to you. Pay attention to flashes of thoughts that come to you. You can also try a simple chant out loud or repeat it in your head as a mantra. Meditating is a wonderful way to center and open up.
3. Walking or Running
If you’re already a runner or a fast paced walker you know that there is definitely something spiritual about having that time to yourself and pushing to go farther then you did yesterday. There’s also something very spiritual about running. Not only do you have even breathing, much like meditating, to center and focus you, but after your body gets into it’s “runner's high” your brain really quietens down and opens up. This is a great time to see what comes to you or to think about a few simple ideas, like being grateful and thanking the universe for what it’s given you.
4. Read about It
If you’re ready to start learning about different ideas of spirituality then it’s time to start reading. Get out your kindle or crack open a real live book and see what people before you have been raving about. Check out different books on the Law of Attraction, Karma and different Eastern thoughts to get you started.
5. Take a Class
Trying out a class at a local bookstore that sells books on Eastern thought and spirituality would be a great way to meet more people who are interested in expanding their minds too. You’ll start up great conversation and learn more about spirituality in person rather than alone.
6. Take Yoga
Whether you’re looking to become more spiritual or for a leaner body (or both) yoga is a great way to get there. Start with simple Hatha yoga, which focuses on the flow of your breath and body as one and work your way through the different practices as you become better. Yoga was originally created for monks as a way to stretch their bodies before long hours of meditation.
7. Go Somewhere Spiritual
If you know of somewhere spiritual near you or want to make a special trip make those plans and go. Certain places like Sedona, Arizona are known for their healing effects and attract people from all over. Sometimes simply being somewhere new can spark spirituality in you that you have never felt before.
8. Surround Yourself with Good People
Being spiritual is about tapping into an energy in you and in others that feels good. If you’re surrounded by friends that make you feel bad, criticize you, tease you and make you feel less esteemed, then it’s definitely time to ditch them. When you’re around like-minded people who you can open up to you, and become more aware of who you are and who you’re becoming.
Becoming spiritual means a lot of things to everyone. Doing what’s best for you and becoming a better person is ultimately what we’re all trying to achieve. Whether you choose to believe in a higher power or the Universe or not, you can still believe in the energy of yourself and that’s ultimately what spirituality is, spirit.
