7 Ways to Be Happier when It's the Last Thing You Want to do ...

By Jackie

When you’re feeling down from work, friends or your latest breakup, I don’t know about you but I’m immediately on the search to find ways to be happier. It might be the last thing you want to do when your PJs are super cozy and there’s a marathon of Sex and the City on, but if you did that forever you wouldn’t be happy either. So, turn the TV off. I’m going to give you some different ways to be happier even if it’s the last thing you want to do.

1 Get outside

One of the best ways to be happier is simply to get outside to breathe in some fresh air. Go do something active, even if it’s just a walk around the block. Run some errands, get some stuff done, keep going with your life. You’ll be busy and outside of your house to distract you from whatever’s ailing you.

Frequently asked questions

2 Listen to Happy Music

Listening to happy music can only do one thing—annoy you until you start laughing. It’s hard to be in a bad mood when you’re listening to Pharrell’s song “Happy”. Get your spirits up and listen to happy music for a while. I guarantee you’ll start feeling better.

3 Watch Funny Movies

This actually works if the movie is funny to you. Sit and watch some silly movies or comedy specials from your favorite comedians. Laughing literally changes your energy and mood. Soon enough you’ll feel so much better that you might even wonder why you were upset before. It might not take all of the pain away, but it will definitely help.

4 See Your Friends

Go out and see your friends. You don’t want to sit there and be Miss Doom and Gloom around a group of people. Get out of your head and grab your besties for some fun. Do something silly like ice skating or horseback riding. It’ll be fun for all of you and guess what? It’ll probably make everyone happy.

5 Give Back

When you’re really down and out sometimes the best thing to do is to stop thinking about your problem and give back to other people who are hurting. Simply giving of your time to help others in need will instantly make you grateful for what you have and how lucky you are. At the end of the day you’ll be happy to know you helped and you’ll feel better for doing it.

6 Fake It

This may feel awkward at first but if you fake it till you make it, you might just make it faster. Putting on a smile will tell your brain and body that things are okay and soon enough, you’ll start acting as if they are. This is by no means a way of telling you to suppress your emotions and not process them. Please, do that. But, when you’re out amongst people wearing a happy face with a happy attitude, it really will eventually put you into a good mood.

7 Do Something

If you’re unhappy and feeling out of control because something didn’t work out, take action to start moving on. If you lost your job or didn’t get the job you wanted, start actively looking for different jobs that might fit you better. If you just broke up with your boyfriend, start working on bettering yourself for the right person. Don’t sit there in a comatose state feeling sorry for yourself. Get up and take action to get what you need. Moving on will give you a sense of power and fearlessness.

There is a lot to be happy about. Sometimes it’s hard to see it when we’re down, but the faster you look around, the happier you’re bound to become. Have you found something that makes you happy? Let us know and leave a comment!
