If you are reading this, you probably know you give in to temptation and would like to know some ways to have more self-control. Would you agree with me that one of the trickiest parts of leading a normal, healthy, and respectable life is that the urge of temptation can sometimes be so strong and overwhelming? Whether you are tempted to eat that junk food or tempted to sleep with that person that you know you definitely shouldn’t, it’s fair to say that as human beings we are constantly walking the fine line between temptation and self-control in all areas of life. A little indulgence every now and then is fine, but when you start giving into it more than you should, that’s when a problem could arise! Here are five tricks to replace temptation with self-control!

1

Be Honest

Be honest with yourself about the things that tempt you the most. It is usually people who in denial that are the first to fall because they haven’t been strong enough with themselves to admit that the could be in danger in the first place. Work on recognizing your biggest weaknesses, and then you can take steps towards avoiding them.

2

Cold Turkey

It might be smoking, or junk food, or something similar, but I say that best thing to do is go full cold turkey. If you try weaning yourself off bit by bit instead, you are always going to have that taste for it lingering around. Going cold turkey might be a shock to the system, but it’s certainly a way to get it out of your system all at once!

3

Make Goals

It’s easier to avoid giving in to temptation if you set yourself some long-term goals. If you don’t have anything to work towards, then denying temptation every day can just feel like an exercise in punishment. If you can come up with a way to treat or reward yourself for a period of good self-control, then you are going to be much more likely to keep up all of the good work.

4

Accountability Partner

It’s all too easy to let yourself down, but when you have someone else in the picture relying on you and tracking you, self-control becomes a much bigger part of your life. Find yourself an accountability partner whose job it is to keep tabs on you and motivate you to keep succeeding in your goals. If you give in to temptation, you have to face their disappointment, and nobody ever wants to face that!

5

Trust the Good Angel

We all have those good and bad angels on our shoulders. The trick is to block out the bad one and only listen to the good one. The stronger and bigger the ‘good’ angel gets, the more easy it will be for you to avoid all of the things that the bad angel used to have you do. If your inner monologue stops encouraging you to give into temptation, then you don’t have to worry about it as much.
