When you start to feel that dreaded feeling sinking in on a Sunday afternoon, you might already start thinking about how to cure a case of the Mondays. I love my weekends and to me, there is nothing more happy-sucking than the idea of waking up to the buzz of an alarm clock at the unthinkable time of 6 a.m. Yuck! I despise Monday so much that I start to get down about it on Sunday afternoon, sometimes Sunday morning or Saturday night! However, instead of letting this dreaded day of the week really drag my spirits down, I have thought of a few ways of how to deal with a case of the Mondays.
1. Make a Plan
My first method for how to cure a case of the Mondays is to make a plan. I am a planner by nature, and I find that putting a plan into place really helps me to get a lot done – and even helps me get through that dreaded Monday. How do I plan? I make a list of the things that I have to get done on Monday and have everything set up before the day starts. When I wake up, I have what I need in place and as I go through my day, I cross off the things that I accomplish as I accomplish them. With each item I cross off, I smile and know that Monday evening is just around the corner.
2. Favorite Breakfast
On Monday mornings, I always have my favorite breakfast: an egg sandwich. I don’t have this any other day of the week except Monday. While I know it’s not that good for me, I love it and having it only on Monday is a way to treat myself. It helps me look forward to the first day of the work week.
I know it sounds cheesy, and I try to smile as much as I can every day, but when I get really bummed out about Monday, I find that putting a big old smile on my face helps me to get in a better mood. This way, I kind of convince myself that it is going to be a good day.
4. Good Music
Instead of waking up to a dreaded buzz, I set my alarm to a beloved song (if you don’t have an iPod alarm clock or some other type of programmable alarm where you can set your own music, you really should invest in one). At least when the alarm goes off, I am woken up to Bob Marley, The Beatles or Cat Stevens instead of that horrid buzz (this helps with waking up every day).
5. Good Lunch
Another thing that helps me cure a case of the Mondays is a good lunch. I either make my favorite lunch at home, or go out and get it. It is something to look forward to.
6. Take a Deep Breath
When the feeling of Monday becomes overwhelming, I just take a deep breath, count to 10 and exhale. It really does help to de-stress me so that I can face the day.
7. A Cocktail
Hey, there is nothing wrong with a cocktail on a Monday. When the day is done, I like to pour a glass of wine, grab a cold beer or make some other tasty libation and relax on the couch with my husband or on the porch with a good book.
Do Mondays get you down, too? How do you go about successfully getting through this dreaded first day of the week?
