Chances are you know at least one naysayer. You know these types of people — they have something negative to say about everything. If you're in a good mood or excited, they have a way of bursting your bubble. You can't escape naysayers, but there are ways to deal with their negativity. Here are seven reasons why you shouldn't listen to the naysayers.
Some naysayers are know-it-alls who have an opinion about everything. If you're talking about your future plans, these people might discourage you from taking a certain path. Their intentions might be good, but oftentimes, naysayers don't know what they're talking about, and they don't have all the details. It's okay to receive advice and suggestions, but this doesn't mean you should accept advice from everyone.
Naysayers who always burst your bubble might bring you down because of jealousy. It's a sad reality, but some people don't want to see others get ahead. They’re happy and okay as long as you stay in the same place and don't do better than them. But the moment something good happens to you, jealousy rears its ugly head.
Some naysayers are just negative people – it's as simple as that. Even if there's a reason to celebrate or be happy, they'll be Debbie downer and spread their negativity. It's important to keep an open eye for these types of people and limit contact, or else they’ll rain on your parade at every given opportunity.
Let’s say you have plans to start a business. You might have carefully considered how to run the business, and there may be a need in your area for the service. If you share your vision with friends or family, the reception might not be what you expected. Rather than change your mind because others don't act excited for you, realize that their negativity might be rooted in their inability to understand your vision. Some people are “workers,” not entrepreneurs. If you're an entrepreneur, it might be difficult to convince a worker that your vision or idea is worth the risk.
Some naysayers aren't risk takers. They might have a fear of the unknown. As a result, there’s a tendency to project their fears on others. Once you decide to take a particular path in life, a naysayer might attempt to change your mind because of their own fears. If they wouldn’t do something risky, they think others should exercise the same caution.
At the end of the day, some naysayers have good intentions. They don't want you to get hurt or fail. But if you listen to the naysayers, and if their fears become your fears, it can limit your potential and keep you stuck in the same place.
It doesn't matter if you're young or old, there's always going to be a naysayer in your circle. It can be a friend, a relative, a coworker or a neighbor. And if you get into the habit of listening to these people and allowing their negativity to shape your thinking, you might never accomplish anything.
