With so many people’s opinions on this Earth and with so many opportunities to consider it’s often difficult to figure out ways to get to know yourself better and discern what you love or want to do with your own life. Rather than feeling overwhelmed that there is so much going on around you, tune into yourself to set yourself apart and figure out the ways to get to know yourself better. In taking these life-changing tips to heart, you will begin to see changes and new understandings in your life!
1. Start a Daily Journal
One of the best ways to get to know yourself better is to reflect on everything through writing. Don’t focus on writing complete sentences or making sense in your journal – just write exactly what is in your heart and on your mind. Keeping a daily journal will not only help release stress but will also be a great way for you to go back and see what sorts of things triggered you to be happy, sad, scared, joyful, etc.
2. Focus on Your Unique Qualities
Give yourself some credit, girl! You are awesome and you are unique in your own way. Don’t focus so much on how you think others view you; everything that you do is so special and you should be highlighting on all the great things that make you, you! Make a list of all the things that you really love about yourself and in the process you will not only feel better, but you will also begin to get to know yourself better.
3. Picture Your Life in the Future
Fast-forward 10, 20, or even 30 years. Where do you see yourself? What do you hope to become? Picturing your life in the future is a great way to find out about yourself! Your ideal image of yourself 30 years older will assist you in finding out about your views on lifestyles, partners, families, and careers.
4. Do What You Love
Ladies always, always, always do what you love! If writing makes you happy, do it. If painting makes you happy, do it. If you don’t know what makes you happy because maybe you’ve been going through a lot and you’re in a difficult part of your life right now, take some time to figure out what you love – this will help you find out who you are. When I was going through a rough time after first trying to pursue a career in finance and feeling miserable, I focused on what I love to do which is helping people, and now I get to do that every day! I encourage you to pursue what you love.
5. Set Goals and Steps to Your Goals
Setting goals will assist you in becoming more organized and will also guide you to find out about yourself. Take some time to be open and honest with yourself: don’t worry about judgments, don’t worry about what anyone else things or expects from you. Think about what YOU want to do and then map out a plan to get there. If you are having a brain fart or really don’t know what you want to do in life I would advise reaching out to a career coach/a professor/a parent or friend, and brainstorm with them.
6. Recite Positive Affirmations
Reassuring yourself that you are special, beautiful, loved, and unique will become the most powerful tool to completely changing your life and moving towards a happy and free attitude for the future. Encourage yourself by reciting positive affirmations that you can achieve greatness, that you are capable of making a change in the world, and that you are worthy of receiving praise for a job well done! Even without a specific idea of what you want to do, reciting these affirmations will create subtle shifts in your life and will ultimately result in a communication with the Universe that you are ready to live out your destiny.
7. Love and Forgive
Getting to know yourself also means opening up to your feelings and emotions, even if it may hurt. If something happened in the past that is preventing you from getting to know and love yourself, you must let it go and forgive before moving forward. The only way to a happy life is to have a happy view of yourself. Once you love yourself, nobody on this planet can ever stop you from finding your purpose and achieving it!
Keep in mind that there are so many people who do not know who they are, or do not know what their purpose is in this life. I encourage you to make 2014 a turning point and open yourself up to changing your life and getting to know yourself. How will you embark on this journey?
