Are you one of those people who find it really hard to cope with change when it happens unexpectedly? If you are, then don’t be too hard on yourself, because you’re definitely not alone! There are plenty out there who feel the same way, and dread any type of change happening in their lives. However, this certainly isn’t the best way to live, and if you can do something to change it, you should make the effort to try. Here is how to be more adaptable so you can have an easier life.
1. Stick at Things
Being adaptable doesn’t mean that you can flit from one thing to another and never get anything finished. It means that you are able to take on board the new information and work with it around things that you are already doing. Stick at your most important tasks; don’t just drop them and move on.
2. Be Willing
It is always worse when you go in to a new situation with an attitude that is against learning. You should always be willing to take part in the process, and when you are willing, things come and go much easier and don’t stress you out as much.
Work on your improvisation skills, because they come in handy when you are faced with a changing situation. The less rigid and stuck to a certain set of rules and cues you are, the better you will be able to handle the prospect of something changing.
4. Work out
You know that working out helps your body, but it can also really help your mind. The physical and mental strength that exercise creates is something that gives you a boost of confidence and self worth, and the more content and confident you are as a person, the less change tends to negatively impact on you.
5. Say Yes
Conduct an experiment where you start to say yes to a lot more things than you used to. If your natural instinct is to say no, even to things and people that you like, then you have no chance of being able to handle unexpected and unplanned change!
6. Be Creative
Make the effort to be more creative in the way that you solve problems. If your tried and tested methods don’t seem to work as well anymore, then maybe your circumstances call for a new set of ideas. Taking a situation from a different perspective can be helpful.
Adopt a survivor attitude of “no matter what happens, I’m going to come out of this on the other side”. Changes in your work and personal life might seem irrecoverable when you are the middle of things, but if you can have the perspective that every storm ends, you won’t have such a hard time when you are in the middle of it.
