8 Helpful Tips on How to Not Sabotage Your Life ...

First, let it be said that nobody is perfect. However, there are certain things to avoid that can really sabotage your life. Remember, you only have one life, which means you got one shot at this. I once heard a motivational speaker say, “You are the only person you can’t get away from,” so be good to yourself. Another woman I met who was dying of cancer said, “It’s a one way trip, make the best of it.”

Those words of wisdom can be broken down into eight practical things to avoid and embrace. Obviously, there are millions more examples than the eight in this list, however, the following clues on how to not sabotage your life can get you off to a good start. Some of them may be obvious, but read on anyway.

Too Much Social Media

Holy digital crack! Social media this, social media that! Snapchat, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, dating sites, even LinkedIn can suck you in! When does it end? People spend hours checking posts, pictures, comments and comedy all day and night! I’m guilty too. There was that viral video clip of a giant rat taking a soap covered shower while standing upright; I was mesmerized! I just couldn’t stop looking and laughing! Sure, social media is entertaining and shocking at times, but it can suck every second of your life away if you are not careful. Before you know it, five years will have gone by, and you have nothing to show for it except a clip of some girl crying over her boyfriend with too much mascara on and it’s running down her face. Seeing it in person is much more entertaining! Relax, I’m joking - LOL. But Seriously, the key here is balance.

2

Messing with a Married Person

Can you say, stress you don’t need? Messing with a married person, causes a big mess. That is why they call it “messing.” This choice never ends well. People get hurt. Families get broken up. Sometimes it even ends in death. Forget catching an STD you can’t get rid of, cheating is expensive. The cost is great both financially and in other ways. Think of all of the time people have wasted messing with someone who is married. Think of all of the years they could have spent with someone worth their time instead. These are just a few of the devastating effects of having an affair. Your time on Earth is precious and in the bigger picture, brief. Don’t be a fool.

3

Having Unprotected Sex

Chlamydia, herpes, gonorrhea, crabs, HIV and AIDS. You think you got problems now? Try explaining to your mate that you think you have something. Then try an explain to them that there is no cure for what you gave them or they gave you. Oh oh, we’re pregnant too? What if the person who caught it is married? Do you really need the stress? People have been having sex since the beginning of mankind, and womankind. The least you can do for the yourself and the people you love or lust, is slip on protection. Consider condoms as an investment, not a loss of sensation.

4

Assuming Someone is Going to Hand You a Perfect Life

If you want something in life, you have to go out and get it. So many people expect something magical to happen - like someone calling them one day, offering them a six figure job for being cute. Cute doesn’t cut it. You have to work hard and smart for what you want. Nobody is going to go to college for you. Nobody is going to start and build a company for you. Nobody is going to buy you your dream house, just because you think you deserve it. A new car isn’t going to appear out of nowhere. Avoid this type of magical thinking. Don’t wait for things to happen in your life, make them happen for you.

5

Exercising and Eating Right

We all know this one. But, because of the slow results of bad eating and not exercising, many don’t take it seriously. It happens so slowly! There is no emergency! That is, until you end up in the emergency room. Even if you are young and in shape, believe me, as time goes on you will notice a little roll here, a little jiggly this-and-that there. It’s painful. The reason you should start early in life is that eating right and exercising needs to be a lifelong habit. I use the word “habit” because if you are not used to doing this, it will be like hell when you get older. Start young. I know eating right and gym memberships can be expensive, but do the best you can. Eat the best you can with what you got, and exercise in a safe park. The park is free. And of course, check with your physician before beginning any workout regimen or diet. You know the drill.

Balance Your Approach to Clubbing & Hanging out

Have you ever been in the club and looked around and asked yourself, “What the heck am I doing here?” Well, you need to take that question seriously. When you are in your 20s there should be two things on your mind, having fun and building your life. These years are critical. I know people who partied all through their 20s and have nothing to show for it except herpes. However, I also know people that busted their butt in their 20s and are now homeowners, making six figures and providing for their family. The trick is balance. In other words, have your fun, but also put in the work.

7

Avoid Smoking & Doing Drugs

I don’t know about you, but I have enough problems. Why create a problem for yourself like smoking? It turns your teeth yellow, makes you cough and wheeze, it smells bad, and it causes cancer. There is no upside. There is also no upside to doing drugs. It might seem cool at first, but when you get addicted, and lose everything you own, and everyone you love it ain’t so cool. Just look at the opioid crisis. Healthy lives full of potential being wiped away. It’s even more heartbreaking when kids are involved.

8

Plan Your Retirement

It’s hard to think about retirement when you are in your 20s or even mid 30s. For some reason, we think we will somehow never get old. News flash! It is coming whether you like it or not. If you are not careful, you could end up on welfare in your late seventies. Imagine being in your eighties and not having health benefits or not even enough money to bury yourself. I don’t know anybody who has that dream early in life. Don’t let it become your nightmare.
