There are many different fashion weeks around the world and they all have different reputations. The Big Four major fashion weeks in New York, London, Paris, and Milan are well known for their prestige while those in Brazil and Japan are better known for boundary-pushing fashion. Whatever the case and wherever the location, fashion weeks are a great way to showcase the works of designers. Take a look at the following fashion weeks around the world and just what you should expect from each one.
New York Fashion Week (branded Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week) is probably the most commercial of the Big Four fashion weeks around the world. The collections are much more wearable and celebrities are regular fixtures, taking up front row seats. As a result, the paparazzi probably outnumber the fashion photographers at this event.
London fashion swings between traditional British style and more in-your-face fashion. This is often reflected in the fashion week shows. You’ve got your big design houses like Mulberry and Burberry, but then you also have bold and brash up-and-coming designers showcasing their stuff.
Milan Fashion Week is held semi-annually in Milan, Italy. It makes up part of the Big Four international fashion weeks alongside New York, London, and Paris. Unlike some other sponsored fashion weeks, Milan Fashion Week is owned by a non-profit association. You can expect plenty of Italian fashion houses showcasing their seasonal collections.
The French are famous for their impeccable taste in fashion. Nowhere is this more on show than during Paris Fashion Week. Expect grand shows from the big design houses like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Christian Dior. Paris Fashion Week currently takes place in the Carrousel du Louvre and other venues around the city. In addition to the women’s Ready To Wear shows, there are the men’s and Haute Couture shows.
It might be one of the new kids on the block, but Berlin Fashion Week is quickly gaining a reputation. It’s becoming well known for the innovative and creative fashion that is shown there. There’s also a noticeable focus on young, up-and-coming designers.
This Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week takes place in Tokyo, Japan. It takes place twice a year in March and October, usually just after the conclusion of the Big Four fashion weeks. Expect to see the latest boundary-pushing collections from Japan’s best designers.
This fashion week takes place in Sydney, Australia. While most of the major fashion weeks take place twice a year, Australia only has one designated fashion week per year (but there are various other fashion festivals that take place throughout the year). With more Australian designers gaining popularity on the world stage, MBFWA is quickly becoming a more important fixture on the international fashion week calendar.
São Paulo Fashion Week (SPFW) is regarded as one of the most important fashion events in Latin America. The shows take place twice a year, and during the spring collections be prepared for plenty of that iconic Brazilian swimwear. While there’s an obvious focus on fashion, SPFW has also been known to shine a light on social and charitable causes.
