Week 1: Hit the Ground Writing

product, organ, brand, writing, design, Internship week one is all about writing! You’ll get an AWT overview, and learn one of our most popular article formats.

Day 1 - Meet and greet with the editor you’ll be training with for this section. You’ll get an overview of the different writing formats and types of content at AWT. You’ll also get your login for the publishing system.

Day 2 - Today you’ll learn about the importance of keywords -- what they are and why they matter -- and you’ll discover how to write a killer intro. You’ll also learn about the format of the first type of AWT article, the classic advice article in “list” format. Easy peasy!

Day 4 - You’ll submit your first sample article in the “advice” format, and get feedback.

Day 5 - You’ll write your second sample article, using the feedback from your first one, and get more helpful suggestions. You’ll also get some general feedback about both of your “advice” articles.

Week 2: More Writing!

This week, you’ll learn another of our formats, our “video” format.

Day 1 - Now that you’ve nailed our “advice” format, you’ll learn the basics of creating a “video” post.

Day 2 - You’ll submit your first sample article in the “video” format, and get a little feedback.

Day 3 - You’ll submit your second “video” article, implementing the feedback you got from your editor, and then get more feedback.

Day 4 - Today you’ll submit your third “video” article… chances are, you’ve really got the hang of it! You’ll hear more feedback, too.

Day 5 - Today is all about you -- how far you’ve come this week, and where you have a little room to grow. It’s also time to rest up and get ready for Week 3!

Week 3: a New Writing Format

Day 1 - You’ll learn how to create a perfect product post, including how to format these posts, and where to find products that pop.

Day 2 - Create and submit your first “product” post, and get feedback.

Day 3 - Today, you’ll submit your second “product” post, and get MORE feedback.

Day 4 - It’s time to post your third “product” article, and you’ll get some feedback again.

Day 5 - You’ll review your Week 3 progress and prep for Week 4.

Week 4: Fabulous Photos

This week, you’ll learn the fourth AWT article format, and you’ll get a close-up look at how and why we choose the images we choose. Fascinating!

Day 1 - There’s so much to learn about our fourth and final article format, the “photo” article, and today, you’ll get an overview.

Day 2 - Today you’ll learn about top photos, what they are, why they’re so important, and how to choose just the right one.

Day 3 - Today is all about illustrations.

Day 4 - You’ll take everything you learned so far this week, and today, you’ll create your first “photo” article, and get some feedback on it.

Day 5 - Today? You’ll write your second “photo” article, with more feedback. Then you’ll rest and relax and get ready for week 5. Wow! You’re already half-way through with your internship. What?

Week 5: It’s All about the GIFs

art, spring, brand, hand, design, Along with images, we also love to use a little motion to express and highlight ideas. This week, you’ll learn about how and when to use GIFs.

Day 1 - Today you’ll get an overview of the best way to incorporate GIFs in your articles.

Day 2 - It’s time to submit your first “GIF” format article, and get some feedback from your editor.

Day 3 - Submit your second “GIF” article, for a little more helpful feedback.

Day 4 - Today you’ll take what you’ve learned so far to create your third “GIF” article, and get more feedback.

Day 5 - This is when your editor will give you some overall feedback on your articles from this week, as well as a “progress report” on how marvelously well you’ve done so far. Bravo!

Week 6: High-Voltage Headlines

You’ve only got one chance to make a stellar first impression, so this week, you’ll learn how to create an attention-grabbing headline for your must-read article.

Day 1 - You’ll be introduced to our Headlines Editor, and she’ll tell you everything you need to know about creating the perfect headline.

Day 2 - You’ll write headlines for 5 of the articles you’ve already submitted, with coaching from your editor.

Day 3 - You’ll write headlines for 5 more of your articles, and get more feedback.

Day 4 - You’ll write headlines for the rest of your articles, AND for some other AWT articles, just to hone your skills and stretch yourself a bit.

Day 5 - You’ll get a final bit of feedback about headlines, then prep for Week 7.

Week 7: Editing is (Almost) Everything

Evernote, person, piano, pianist, musical instrument, Editing can mean the difference between an article that’s okay, and one that really shines! This week you’ll learn how to edit for technical errors, and for content, both while maintaining the author’s unique voice.

Day 1 - Today you’ll meet our edit staff and get an introduction to the AWT approach to editing.

Day 2 - Today you’ll have a peek at some articles our edit team has tidied up, and edit a few of your own articles for technical errors as well.

Day 3 - Editing for content is completely different from editing from a technical perspective, and today, you’ll review a few “before and after editing” articles to see exactly how our edit team can make an article a better read without losing an author’s special spin.

Day 4 - Today you’ll try your hand at editing existing AWT articles for content, with feedback from your editor.

Day 5 - Today you’ll take everything you learned about both types of editing, and apply it to editing a small set of existing articles, with more helpful feedback.

Week 8: Graduation

eyewear, glasses, vision care, hair, face, In your final AWT internship week, you’ll take everything you’ve learned so far and create your own articles from start (headline) to finish (editing). These five articles will form the basis of your letter of recommendation. Go you!

Day 1 - Today you’ll create and edit two new articles from the very beginning (“advice” and “GIF”) and our editor will provide feedback.

Day 2 - This time, you’ll create and edit one “photo” article and one “product” article, with more coaching from our editors.

Day 3 - Today you’ll create and edit a “video” article, and get your final article-specific feedback from your editor.

Day 4 - We’ve set aside this nearly-last day for your questions, and for any final feedback or coaching our edit team has for you.

Day 5 - Time flies -- you’ve completed your AWT internship already! Today is “graduation day, and we’ll tie up any loose ends and take care of whatever documentation you need to get college credit for your internship (provided by you).
