7 Ways to Feel Less Awkward in Social Situations ...

By Holly

Do you hate leaving the house, because you never know what to say when you get stuck in a conversation with another human being? Well, with a little work, that can change. Socializing with others, whether it's a cashier or your crush, isn't as difficult as it seems. Here are a few ways to feel less awkward in social situations:

1

Prepare Beforehand

If you're worried about a teacher calling on you in a certain class, study the class material so that you'll have the right answer. If you're worried about looking like a loser at a party, think of some topics to bring up before you head out the door. If there's nothing interesting going on in your life to talk about, look at some news or tabloid websites to see what the latest stories are.

2

Dress to Impress

The better you dress, the better you'll feel. Why? Because you're going to have much more confidence. If you're dressed in stained clothes, you'll be self-conscious when talking to people, because you'll be wondering if they're judging you. So if you wear something that makes you feel great about yourself, you'll have one less thing to stress about.

3

Always Ask Questions

Being the only silent one in a group can make you feel awkward. If that's the case, you need to find a way to speak up. If you don't have anything interesting to add to the conversation, you can always join in by asking questions. People love to talk about themselves, so it's always a good method to use.

4

Use Your Cell as a Crutch

When all else fails, your phone will be there for you. If you're sitting alone at a party, you should get up and mingle. But until you get the confidence to do so, text on your phone so that you feel more comfortable. Just don't spend the whole night on that cell. Eventually, you want to gather the courage to actually socialize.

5

They're Oblivious, Not Observant

You have to realize that people aren't as observant as you think they are. If you spill water on your dress, laugh it off and wipe it off. There might not have even been anyone who saw you make the mistake, so don't get too embarrassed over it. The world doesn't revolve around you, so even though you'll assume everyone's laughing at you, they're not.

Famous Quotes

To give oneself earnestly to the duties due to men, and, while respecting spiritual beings, to keep aloof from them, may be called wisdom.

Get out More

The more often you socialize, the better you'll get at it. Stop turning down invitations to parties and telling your friends you're too busy to see them. It's good for you to get out of the house, so be brave and go for it. It'll be less scary the more you do it.

7

Don't Dwell

If you make a joke that falls flat, don't let it bother you for the rest of the night. It happens to everyone. Keep telling jokes, and eventually one will get the laugh you've been waiting for. You don't want one little thing to ruin a fun time, so try not to dwell on anything embarrassing that you end up doing or saying.

Even social butterflies have been in awkward situations, so don't feel like you're alone. These types of things happen to the best of us. Are you awkward when it comes to social situations?

The best advice I can give is to be yourself but amplify the things about you that make you special. If you are a nice person complement someone on what they are wearing. If you have a quirky sense of humor go ahead a blurt out what you are thinking (as long as it's not mean). Make eye contact with people that look interesting to you, smile and BE confident! These are great ice breakers and tend to make people gravitate toward you. If you see someone that interests you by ALL means introduce yourself! I personally spent too long being an introvert and didn't realize how easy it is to OWN the room!! Don't make my mistake and get out there and have some fun! If you feel nervous, change your perception of that feeling because what you are really feeling is excited...recognize that and enjoy the rush!!

An introvert, a true introvert is always an introvert - this does not equal unhappiness. Our comfort is from within ourself not always derived from external sources - inner strength / satisfaction

No nothing at all wrong with being an introvert. However, you will meet less people, you will go less places, and will always wonder why you are missing out on all the fun. I know, I've been there and I am never going back! Having too much fun!

I love people but I am SOOOO awkward I can't help it lol!!!

I have to say I disagree with using your phone as a crutch. I believe that makes someone unapproachable. If I see someone sitting somewhere playing on their phone I'd rather not go and talk to them. Being to into your phone disconnects you from the real world and will make social situations even more awkward. Try talking to someone that's playing on their phone

Nothin wrong with being an introvert

I am not just an introvert I am shy and have anxiety. I really want to meet new people, but always feel so stressed doing so. Yes I know, no one else cares, that most conversations are about the person themselves, but I am a listener not a questioner. And I can't seem to make a conversation out of nothing like others can.

Always wear your best smile that will add up on your confidence to socialize coz when people see you smiling sometines they're the one who will approach you first

I'm a introvert.
