1

It Isn’t Healthy

One important reason to break the complaining habit is because it isn’t healthy for you. This is true both mentally and physically. Studies have proven time and time again that a positive outlook helps you to have a healthier life. Being negative and stressed can contribute to high blood pressure, anxiety, depression and many other physical ailments. You can easily observe the effect that complaining has on your mental health by how your mood is when you complain.

2

It Brings You down

I just mentioned this in my last point. Complaining brings you down. And why wouldn’t it? You are focusing on all of the negative things in your life instead of all of the good things. While we all have bad days, a lesson I have learned is that happiness and our frame of mind often have more to do with our attitude than our circumstances.

3

It Pushes Others Away

Complaining is a habit that pushes others away. No one enjoys hearing a constant barrage of complaints. If you have a legit complaint and complaining isn’t an everyday thing with you then those close to you will likely be very willing to listen and empathize with you. But if complaining is all you do, the feeling they are going to get when they are around you is that they want to run. And who could blame them? We all feel that way when we get around negative, complaining people, don’t we?

4

It Makes You Look Bad

Complaining makes you look bad. It makes you look like you are unhappy and ungrateful. Of course this does not apply if you only complain when something truly is wrong. But if you look for things to complain about daily and are complaining every time you encounter someone, that is going to stick with them. Thankfully, this is a habit that you can change if you truly want to do so.

5

It is a Waste of Time

For the most part, complaining is a waste of time. Nothing can usually be done about whatever you are complaining about. There are times when it can be productive to complain in order to achieve the goal of getting something changed or taken care of. However, if that is not the situation, you may want to ask yourself what your complaining is going to accomplish. It makes you feel bad as well as those around you.

It Invites Negative Energy Back in Your Life

You know, something I have noticed is that positivity tends to attract positivity and negativity tends to attract negativity. So if you are being negative and complaining a lot of the time you should not be surprised when this is what seems to come back to you. You may find that you are surrounded by complainers. This is an example of how misery loves company. The good news is that you can change that if you truly decide that you want to make a change in yourself.

7

It is Hard to Make New Friends

It isn’t easy to make new friends when you are a chronic complainer. Most of us don’t enjoy being in the company of someone who is always complaining. We may like the person but their complaining can push us away. A person that complains a lot can be draining of our positive energy. They don’t usually send off good vibes that others are looking for in a friendship.

Complaining is something that we all do from time to time but it can become a habit if we are not careful. Have you had to work on breaking the habit of complaining? How did you do that?
