9 Quotes by Gandhi the World Would do Well to Remember ...

If I could only be inspired by words from one source, I would have to pick quotes by Gandhi. This simple man, who trained as a lawyer in England and then led his country in a non-violent campaign to gain independence from the British Empire while wearing nothing but a homespun loincloth and flop flips, was nothing short of remarkable. He was an inspirational leader and when you read some of these quotes by Gandhi you’ll see how he mobilized a nation.

Retribution

Retribution This is one of my very favorite quotes by Gandhi. I love that it is the antithesis of that well known saying (from The Bible), “An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.” Indeed, Gandhi is saying that there is no reasoning in that if you receive an injury you should injure back, as it is no compensation. I believe he is saying that hatred breeds hatred, and along with his other teachings, he is saying forgiveness is better than revenge.

Change

Change Do you ever find yourself thinking that too many people complain about our world and don’t do anything about it? What about all those people in power who talk and take no action? 50 years on from Gandhi and there’s still too many people complaining and doing nothing. The only way things will change is by someone making the effort. Why not let it be you that makes the first move?

3

Inner Strength

Inner Strength This is one of the many quotes by Mahatma Gandhi that some people have trouble interpreting. Obviously, the first problem with it is that it is untrue, but it becomes true according to the frame of mind that you should adopt. A lot of suffering would stop overnight if we all adopted the mindset that nobody should be able to hurt us without our permission. And, he proved that you do not always have to use physical force in order to get what you want.

4

Life

Life This is one of the things Gandhi said that needs no in-depth interpretation. He has summed up what is wrong with modern life on so many fronts in one simple sentence. Do we take time to smell the flowers, to see the clouds, to appreciate the little things in life? No, because we are rushing to be somewhere, to increase our possessions, to waste time on “stuff” that adds little meaning to our life. Our time on Earth is short. We should make the most of every little thing.

5

Success

Success This is a story that has been told over and over again throughout history. Jobs and Wozniak went to major hardware manufactures when they were in college and said they would work for free on their new idea, the personal computer, and were laughed out of the office. Communications experts said that the telephone had no practical real-world uses. Robert Slater wrote, “Don't worry about people stealing an idea. If it's original, you will have to ram it down their throats,” (1987). Gandhi inspired a nation to throw off the yoke of colonialism. I find this to be more inspirational than, if at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again.

Action

Action Even as a very religious man, Gandhi understood the limitation of faith. Unanswered prayers don’t count for anything. There is far more reward and meaning in a single, real act of kindness than a whole congregation praying for one to happen. He is not telling us to give up praying, but telling us that practical acts are more relevant than religious observances.

7

Animals

Animals The quotes by Mahatma Gandhi show his compassion for all living things. Here is he saying that animals are helpless when compared with humans. Pair this with another quote – James D Miles said, “You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him.” – and you have a powerful message about the way humans treat animals.

8

Truth

Truth There are quite a few quotes by Gandhi on the issue of truth. This one is simplicity itself. The truth is the truth, no matter what, and no matter if you are the only person who believes it. Stand up for what you believe in and what is right, even if you are the only one fighting.

9

Humankind

Humankind I’m ending with one of the quotes by Gandhi that I remember when I see the inhumanity of man. It doesn’t matter whether it is a news story of child abuse, the latest school massacre, cyber bullying, or the latest forces casualty in Afghanistan – Gandhi reminds us that the majority of people in the world are good.

The world hasn’t moved on so much since Gandhi’s death, and the quotes by Gandhi can still provide us a way to change today. Which of these is your favorite or one you think we would gain most from putting into practice more?
