Happiness is a Choice

If you're unhappy because of the hand you’ve been dealt, you might laugh at the idea that happiness is a choice. So it might come as a shock to learn that many happy people have also gone through tough times. In fact, some still deal with their hardships. You can't change your situation, but you can change how you respond. If you change your mindset and resolve to be happy, you'll discover it’s much easier to cope during hard times.

2

Happiness Starts with Gratitude

If you can't pull yourself out of a funk, remember that happiness starts with gratitude. Gratitude is the “quality or feeling of being grateful or thankful.” The next time you're throwing yourself a pity party, flip the script and think of everything you're grateful for. This might be your family, your friends, your health, etc. Redirect your focus and you’ll see that while your life isn't perfect, it's not bad either.

3

Happiness is Contagious

I don't know about you, but it's hard to be negative when I'm around excited, upbeat and happy people. If you're feeling sad or miserable, don't isolate yourself. More than ever, you need to be around people who are cheerful. When you’re ready to talk to someone about your problems, don't go to someone who has a similar attitude. Misery loves company, and these people might drag you down. Speak with someone who's positive and can help readjust your outlook.

4

No One else Can Make You Happy

Although it's helpful to confide in someone who can help you see the good in your life, don't expect this person to make you happy. At the end of the day, you — and only you — and pull yourself out of a funk.

UPD:

True contentment begins internally and radiates outward. While friends and family can certainly add joy to your life, your happiness should not hinge on their presence or actions. Embrace self-care and cultivate a mindset grounded in positivity and gratitude. This internal shift empowers you to manage life's ups and downs with grace. Remember, relying solely on others for your joy is like building a house on shifting sand—it can suddenly collapse. Instead, develop inner resilience and self-sufficiency; they're the bedrock of ongoing happiness.

5

No One's Happy 24/7

It's also important to remember that no one is happy 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You might look at a friend, a coworker or a relative and secretly envy their gleeful state of mind. While these people might appear to always be cheerful, they also have their bad days. Their life isn’t perfect either. The difference is that they don't let the bad overshadow the good.

Take Care of Your Body

If you're feeling down, getting physically active can also improve your mood and mindset. Exercise releases “feel good” hormones which can help you cope with hardships. It doesn't have to be a strenuous activity. You can hop on your bike and go around the block, take a walk through the park, go swimming or play a sport. The idea is to get out, get active and take your mind off your problems.

Laughter is the Best Medicine

If you're having a bad day, sign into Netflix or go to your nearest Redbox location and choose the funniest comedy you can find. Spending the next two hours laughing at a good comedy is sure to lift your mood and help you forget the day’s troubles – even if only temporary.

Finding your happy place can be challenging, especially when you have a lot going on. But if you can remember these seven truth about happiness, it'll be easier to keep a smile on your face.
